Velasquez provides background on how Downtown San Angelo, Inc originally started, became part of the National Main Street program, and focused its efforts on revitalizing the Downtown area, while still maintaining the historic features that distinguish it from other cities. Even with the challenges of Covid 19, 11 new businesses have opened in the Downtown Historic District, with the organization seeking out what Velasquez calls ‘Amazon-proof’ products and services – things that people can’t purchase online. With that and support from the Angelo State University Small Business Development Center, also located Downtown, DSA has been able to help businesses find and apply for state and government loans and grants to keep them going throughout the Pandemic. Anyone interested in becoming a member of DSA can stop in their office or call.
