KJVI Community Matters – Veterans / Mental Health
Duration – 19:43
Air Dates: November 14, 2020, 8am; November 15, 2020, 8 p.m.
Guests: Kathy Coppola, Chapter Executive Director NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness)
Anita Herron, National Programs Manager, NAMI
The program focuses on mental health challenges Veterans face when transitioning to Civilian life, and the additional impact on family and friends. Coppola is the daughter of a World War II Veteran, Herron’s Father was a Vietnam Veteran, and she’s married to a Veteran who served in Afghanistan. They each share their personal stories of how each Veteran handled their emotional difficulties differently, largely depending on the cultural norms at the time, the public’s reaction to the specific war, and the availability of Mental Health Assistance, which has largely been stigmatized by the Military, as well as the public at large. Acceptance of Mental Health care if growing, and NAMI has programs, such as ‘Homefront’, specifically for Veterans.
